Now You Know
Is Trump Serious About Panama?
I’m sure you’ve heard the news regarding Trump and Panama. In fact, I put it in the recap above so you must be properly retarded if you haven’t heard about it.
Trump has accused Panama of charging excessive rates to use the vital trade passage, and warns of potential Chinese influence.
The Panama Canal was opened in 1914 and the canal and the land around it was controlled by the US until it entered an agreement with Panama in 1977 which led to the canal’s return to full Panamanian control in 1999.
China does not control the canal but a subsidiary of Hong Kong-based CK Hutchison Holdings manages two ports at the canal's Pacific and Caribbean entrances.
The Panama Canal allows up to 14,000 ships to cross each year and accounts for some 2.5% of global seaborne trade.
The US president-elect has also renewed his call for the US to buy Greenland from Denmark. Trump believes that owning Greenland would be central to the USA’s national security.
However, the island's Prime Minister Mute Egede has struck back, insisting Greenland is not for sale.
The world's largest island, which sits between the Atlantic and Arctic oceans, is 80% covered by an ice sheet and is home to a large US military base. Greenland gained semi-independence from Denmark in 1979.
Trump also previously called for the US to buy the island during his first term in office.
