Now You Know
Mark Careny: New Canadian Prime Minister

Guess Question Mark GIF by Coins And Connections

Who is Mark Careny?

Canada’s ruling Liberal party has chose Mark Careny as its new leader (and therefore the country’s prime minister).

Careny decisively won the contest to replace Trudeau who stepped down in January. Specifically, he won with about 131,000 votes, 86% ahead of Trudeau’s former finance minister Chrystia Freeland with 11,000 votes.

So who is Careny?

Careny went to Harvard and did his postgrad at Oxford University. He would then work for 13 years at Goldman Sachs before becoming Governor of the Bank of Canada from 2008-2013. He then became the Governor of the Bank of England from 2013-2020.

As such, he does not have lots of political experience, but is placing a lot of focus on Canada’s economy.

What are his policies?

It is well known that Careny hates Trump. He has vowed to be tough on America and said he will impose retaliatory tariffs on the US “until the Americans show us respect”.

He will call an election soon after he becomes sworn in. Polls show the Liberal Party has reduced the Conservatives’ lead ahead of this years election, which is largely thanks to the Liberals’ tough stance on the US and tariffs.
